Use RawTherapee for Nikon D5300

RawTherapee is a wonderful image processing software with very good user interface. It is very useful tool for converting RAW image files produced by DSLR cameras to JPEG format. It allows us to apply a lot of fine adjustments to a RAW image and convert to JPEG, PNG or TIFF. I prefer to take images in RAW format rather than directly in JPEG. By this post I am trying to help people taking images in RAW format with their Nikon D5300 camera and using Ubuntu 14.04 as their OS.

RawTherapee 4.2 in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
RawTherapee 4.2 in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

As per my experience Version 4.0.12 of RawTherapee that comes in default Ubuntu repository do have a problem with handling RAW files from Nikon D5300. When I installed RawTherapee from default repository, the images was having a violetish or greenish overlay. It is to be noted that same issue is visible with Shotwell image viewer that comes installed with Ubuntu.

I searched all over Internet to fix the issue in RawTherapee. Some people suggested to edit camconst.json and add configuration changes to handle Nikon D5300. But no solution helped me to fix the issue.

Then noticed that version 4.0.12 of RawTherapee is actually released on January 2014, which is more than one and half year earlier. Latest version available is 4.2. I thought it would be a better idea to try latest version than try to fix older one.

So, I followed the instructions given at RawTherapee download page for Ubuntu. It is to add another repository maintained by Dariusz Duma and get newer RawTherapee than in default repository of Ubuntu 14.04. Fortunately, the problem I mentioned above is not visible with RawTherapee 4.2!

If you are also facing similar issue with RawTherapee that comes with Ubuntu default repository. Then please try version 4.2 instead. Just execute following commands to get version 4.2[^1] of RawTherapee.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:dhor/myway
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install rawtherapee

Please visit RawTherapee website to know more about the software, its documentation and tutorials.

Note: 4.2 is the current version available from ppa:dhor/myway for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.
